Vegetarian Way of Life

0 Comments - Add comment Written on 27-Oct-2008 by SpykeAndSpencer

Becoming vegetarian is a commitment to a lifestyle change. It's a process that takes time, patience and lots of knowledge. Having been vegetarian and now vegan for 34 years there is still so much to learn and discover on this sojurn towards health and wellness.

Type of Vegetarians:

  • Vegan:  Eats nothing from an animal nor it's by-products like dairy and eggs
  • Lacto-Vegetarian:  Includes dairy products in their diet.
  • Ovo-Vegetarian:  The only animal product in this diet is eggs.
  • Pesco-Vegetarian:  Includes fish, eggs and dairy products, no red meat.

There are many reasons why people choose to change or at least modify their lifestyle and become a vegetarian in some
form or another.

Many make the switch from an animal based diet to a plant based diet for health reasons. They feel better
and find that have fewer health issues like asthma, diabetes and high-cholesterol and can even ward off cancer.

Here are some other reasons for loading up on fruits, veggies, whole grains and nuts and seeds and cutting back and
eliminating animal products:

Health reasons.
A vegetarian diet can be very healthy. Some people become vegetarian so they have less fat and more fibre in their diet.

Moral reasons.
There are those who object to the killing of animals and the often cruel and inhuman practices.

Religious reasons.
Some people's religious beliefs stop them eating meat.

Environmental reasons.
There are those who believe that consumption of meat causes farmer's to continually deforest the earth to create grazing land.

Taste.
Some people simply don't like the taste and texture of meat.

There are also many who make their choices best on a combination of reasons. Children often cite their reasons for eliminating meat as moral.

In a Harvard Grad School study, children were interviewed on why they chose to be vegetarian. Their answers ranged from "I feel healthier" to "bad for my tastebuds,..it's really chewy".

The most popular reason was that "Animals are my friend". Whatever reason or combination of them, adding more fruits and vegetables and eating less animal products can only have a positive effect all the way around.
