What it Means to Have Rhythm

Written on 23-Nov-2008 by SpykeAndSpencer
Everyone has rhythm. That’s right everyone does, even though it’s hard to tell sometimes watching others dance or talk. All of us have an ability to express ourselves in our own way.  The clear differences come from our physical ability, how we figure out what we are watching or listening to, and how to bring it all together afterwards.

Rhythm is patterned repetitious movement. This involves:

- Silence
- Accents
- Tempo
- Volume

Watching either a dancer or listening to a musician you can tell something about what you are seeing or hearing. You can just feel it. Is it difficult or easy? What happens when you try it? Can you jump in? Do you want to jump in? Are you having fun at it?
Practice is important to achieve great rhythm. Dancers, drummers, string players, horn players, DJ’s and singers practice. And what do they practice to? That which was taught to them by people they’ve watched over and over or read about or both.

Good rhythm comes from using quality time to create conditions that will help you succeed in what your're trying to accomplish. Having fun copying your friends or your favorite stars is a good way to learn to maintain good rhythm techniques.

7 Ways to Create YOUR OWN Rhythm

1. Work on your rhythm and start slowly.
2. Learn what you are doing step by step.
3. Try variations of the same thing.
4. Go to places where people do what you’re trying to learn.
5. Write it down. Taking notes adds to memory your own insight.
6. Invent, yes invent.  Really feel the rhythm flow through you.
7. Find a partner or better yet be a part of a group of like minded people.
